This is Sophia, who now lives in the lap of luxury. Thanks to a friend who scooped her up off the street a couple of years ago, Sophia is secure and loved in my home ... and now she "speaks" Italian! -- Mirella |

When I visited SEAACA it was just to look. I thought if a special dog jumped out at me maybe I'd adopt, but expected to go home by myself.
Holland, the Adoption Manager, steered me to a small shepherd mix so plain she almost blended in with the floor. Out in the meeting area the dog seemed more attached to Holland than interested in me, but when Holland left us together for 10 minutes that all changed. By the time she returned, this dear dog was looking at me like I'm the center of the world. Well, her world, at least.
Now Heather is my close companion at home and on trips. The funny thing is she no longer looks so common to me. My Heather is beautiful, inside and out. -- Ann |

When I walked in SEAACA and was looking around I had no plan on getting a dog because I already had a cat with a litter. But I saw a little three-legged dog and fell in love. When I carried him I was in tears. The SEAACA staff told me how to adopt him.
He is home with me and now, part of my family. His name is Lucky ... Isn't that funny? I adopted him on Friday the 13th!
Thank you SEAACA for letting me bring home my baby. -- Yvonne |

There she was, back in the corner by herself: cute but not a puppy. Her loneliness drew me in and I asked to see her outside. She walked away from me like I wasn't there. I said no I don't want this one and she didn't seem to want me either. You see, she'd been there before. It always ended the same way: back to the cage to wait for someone else to do the same thing.
SEAACA's shelter worker Ericka Dominguez said she was a good dog, but people didn't want her because she's older. Boy was Ericka right. This dog is already house trained, begs and speaks. I call her Lady. I have fallen in love. Thank you Ericka and SEAACA for saving these animals. -- Aloma |

When we found a black, nondescript dog on the street five years ago, he was such a skinny mess of sores, dry fur in spikes (what there was of it) and parasites, we thought euthanasia might be the kindest thing. But something in this pitiful pooch sparked us to see what good vet care, nutrition and love could do. Today, you would not recognize Timothy as that dog. Goes to show there's a handsome beast in the most worn-out of strays.
Jeff was an unwanted kitten we took in 15 years ago. It fills our hearts to see them enjoy an afternoon nap together. So, who cares about a little black fur on the bedspread? -- Igor & Debbie |

Parsley was found running the streets in 2005. He was skinny and scared, with teeth worn to the gums and sores under dirty, matted fur. Vet said he was at least 10 years old and malnourished.
I'm so glad I adopted that poor old guy! Today Parsley's gained weight, his fur is shiny and soft and skin has healed. He loves to play with my other old dog, Myrtle. If a dog can smile, then that's what Parsley does almost all the time. He brings me joy everyday. -- Holland |

A stray pit bull came into the shelter and gave birth to seven puppies the next day. She was an old mom who'd had many litters before. Though her breed can be fierce and she was watchful toward her pups, she trusted the shelter staff. They arranged for her to be in a foster home till the pups were weaned. Two didn't make it, but the other five were placed into homes.
I knew that an old mother dog whose past showed on her body didn't have much hope of being adopted, so I decided to be her last chance. That was four years ago. Today "formerly fertile Myrtle" is my funny, smart and beloved companion, and Parsley's best pal. -- Holland |

Sueki captivated me and my Mom. Who could resist that smile? Soon after we brought her home we discovered Sueki just did not agree to walk on a leash, no matter how we tried bribing her. But we all got lucky when she was selected to appear on The Dog Whisperer's first season. Shhhh ... Sueki loves to leash up for walks now! -- Anthan |

"Ahhh, my favorite thing to do....sleep!" I was at the right place at the right time to adopt Dexter. Sadly, 3-year-old Dexter's first owner passed away with no one to care for him. Dexter was cooped up for 2 days before I wrapped him up and took him home. His blue eyes, markings and warm personality won me over. Dexter has lived with me now for 13 years and is an amazing companion. It seems odd to say he's been such a big part of my life. That's how it is, and I am so thankful. -- Marc |

Lola's owners had a house fire and couldn't keep her when they had to move to an apartment. 1 1/2 year old Lola has perked up the house with her running around, playing with cat toys and she has even coaxed Dexter (see above) off the couch to romp around. She is a welcomed part of the family and has even started helping Dexter groom his tattered coat he won't let me touch anymore. She is a hoot to be with. Why didn't I adopt a second cat earlier?! -- Marc |

I met this dog when I was a volunteer walker at a rescuer's adoption events. Nobody was interested in "Gibson" and he looked sick to me. It was clear the rescuer had taken on more than she could handle. I offered to take him home for the night and wound up at the emergency vet's a few hours later. Turned out Gibson had pneumonia and a foxtail deep in an ear canal -- very painful. My husband and I saw Gibson through surgery and later treatments for arthritis. Gibson never overcame all his ailments but became a happy boy in our home. What a love. You could say we rescued him from the rescuer -! -- Deborah |

Twelve years ago my neighbor was moving and couldn't take her nine-month old kitten. She asked if I'd "try him out" for the day. As a child I had horrible allergies and he was a LONG HAIR! My husband would have no problem adopting, for he missed having a pet like he had as a child. Well, I fell in love with Buster immediately. I kept sniffing his head and was pleasantly surprised to find not only did he smell sweet, I wasn't sneezing at all!
After adopting Buster I see animals differently. Each one has a personality and bonds. I am truly enriched having him in my life. -- Lillian |
